a fairyless tail of how it all began

so once upon a short while ago, a fair and feisty maiden met her prince charming in the great land of the marin brewing company..not far from the golden gate city.

she was smitten as was the man prince of so much charm, not to far from that night, they married a top the highest peek, blinded in the fog of the ocean below..and no one rolled to their demise, (not in this fairy tale).

as the trucks, personal driven autos, and buses aplenty rattled next to their blessed abode, the decision was made to hop in their chariot and travel to the lands afar to find new shelter away from the ho hum of the majestic like palacey city, away from the loans of chateaus and fees a plenty on numerous accounts that held the duckets, away from financial fortresses that was her life's work.
as for the charmer he still slaved away brewing ale upon ale for a tyrant on the hill, his measly salary was a box filled with pints upon pints of this filthy yuck...praise the reinheitsgebot from the old land...oh he misses his home land of purity ale.

they travel and travel, they look and look, and soon they find the cottage under the enormously giant sequoias...and they are home. healthy and prosperous.

except he works long hours and she works from the abode....he toils all night and rests all day.
a las they need a new plan just as they travel far from home and found a new settlement in the magical forest.

the plan is slowly hatched, for as the house is overflowing with beautiful, luxurious, and supple textiles that have been delivered from afar to be delivered afar.....

the charming prince and his gracious love, catch wind of a shack that can accommodated the treasures they both love, hers, the tiny trinkets and cottons woven into sheets good enough for an emperor and his clothes.

the charmenator's achilles heal is or may we say great attraction, is to the new invention of the bicycle, and everything that it stands for......

they are now living happliy ever after,well running a small business hoping to rent out bikes during the summer....ho hum :)

30's reproduction prints...

My idea of this post was to first, show my new fabric that I am carrying, my first ever order of 30's reproduction prints and give a brief history on them.

After searching on the web for more than 30 minutes, I basically came up with nothing very informative...given I read some blogs, saw some great prints, and wonderful items made with the fabric.

Though I couldn't seem to find anything more than, feedsack fabrics were once used from feedsacks because they didn't have good access to cheap textiles.

So, here are the pictures, I love the prints, I just wish the little doggies would have come too.

As some may know, I opened a B&M store, so I made a website to go along with it. It took me a few days to get it up, with pictures and all. The most painstaking part was doing all the BLAH BLAH that goes a long with it. So I thought and I thought and I wrote and I wrote, to my satisfaction. And wah lah, I had a website.

Then I get a brilliant idea, why not sell my stuff on my site, too. Now don't get me wrong I love Etsy, I love Etsy, but it can be limited with how you can organize and if you list multiple items you never get to the top.

ie, the other day I was looking at the fabric section and in one day (not even a whole one) there was 1500 listings in the fabric section, not everything goes in that section but that is another post. 1500 listings is 60+ pages, how many people dig through 60+ pages of stuff unless you are really determined.

(back to the story)
So, I had to upgrade my website to sell on it, I thought that if I just work on my new one that my old one would still be there until I was ready. NO NO and NO, all my hours and work went bye bye in a matter of seconds. $%&* and %$#@ and *&^%(#@*.

So now I have half a completed site up and I am desperately trying to get it finished......ah my fingers hurt from listing stuff, I have over three hundred things to do. AHHH.

There is a silver lining, it does look better than the other one, I guess everything happens for a reason.

My super tiny town..

So I am shamelessly advertising my business, I will try to keep this to a bare minimum, I opened on the first of February...and not to my knowledge, Super Bowl Sunday. Let's say there was nay a customer, nor here nor there. So I went home to lick my bruised ego and say silly me, and damn the Raiders for never making it to the Super Bowl.

I am opened five to six days a week in the winter, most likely seven in the summer. The Russian River gets a lot of people coming to it, I even own a canoe...great fun.

I have a few more notiony things at my shoppe, some great hair flowers..and a bit more.

Love to have anyone stop by...we also rent beach cruisers!!

a new look

I decided to change the way my shoppe looks, something more exciting, something different from everyone else. I know how easy it is to get lost in Etsy, I have been there searching for hours, not being able to tell one shoppe from the others will searching through supplies or handmade.

So with the help of a snazzy new photo program I came across, this is the way I decide to go... a little more edgy, a little more fun.

The only down fall about revamping a shoppe is the hours and hours it takes to change all the pictures, then go it an edit all listings. But I think it will be worth it, I already like looking at my shoppe more...hehe

Opening Day...Where are the customers

So today is my first day opening my B&M....I am sitting patiently waiting for people to stop by. People asked me if I am stressed out, I said...NO, but now I think it is creeping up on me. I think I'll have to post later to say what happened.

So for your viewing enjoyment, I have posted some pictures...then I am off to work on my website.

So, I am carrying few notions, since there is a store in town that carries some already...though I am the first fabric store here!!!!!!yay

I heard it through the grapevine...Westminster and Freespirit Fabrics

That the manufacturers of Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, Heather Ross, Heather Bailey, Anna Marie Horner, and many more will start instilling a MSRP policy that supposedly states that all of their fabrics have to priced at 9.50 a yard and cannot be discounted until a year after production of the print. This means a giant jump in prices of their fabrics especially if you shoppe on etsy.

What this will do to business is unknown yet, this price rule we start at the beginning of February. If it is not followed suppliers will have their privileges revoked for one year.

So I've been on Etsy for about 8 months and everybody talks about having a treasury and how hard it is to get. I have to agree, its super hard, but I patiently waited as people's expired. Then one came available, then I freaked out.
I have no idea how to do one, and on top of that I got it on my second shoppe that I have not saved any favorites for. So I frantically try to remember my favorite shoppes and sellers, afraid that if I go out of the treasury page it will disappear. I had no idea how long I have to make one.

ahhh, the wait, the joy, the beautiful pictures.... I'm so happy, I've snagged one, isn't it pretty.

My New Year Resolution.......

Is to use capitalization from now on. I think I know why I capitalize seldomly, I am product of instant messaging and text messages, people don't take the time to capitalize when typing super fast. Considering that this has taken me a bit longer to make sure I use my caps. Grammer be damned, but I am getting on the boat.

this is the shoppe before they moved their stuff out...retired reality office, the corner that you see will hopefully a little class room for teaching sewing..(rubbing hands together with huge smile, hehe)
first customer...no no, my neighborhood bartender, though he claims that he sews and is making pillows for his work.

so when you walk in the door...this is who you'll see...me,owner of a business that is in a actual building. no more waking up and staying in my pj's going to my computer, i'll actually have to go somewhere for work.
anyways,this front room will be filled with fabric lining the walls. we are waiting for our astro turf to come in for the flooring. hey it is half a bike rental shoppe.

there should be no reason people are late bring the bikes back.

this is a inside view from the front, ill be there, as shown in picture below..though with no bud light lime bottle. if you look to the left of the picture, that green thing is my chalkboard that i painted on the wall. if you have ever used it, its like glue...not easy to use, can't wait to try it.

ao if i had oodles of money to spend on myself for my birthday...my fabulous cake would look something like this, but you know i dont think id ever eat it. i really wonder how they taste? does it taste better than my yummy hostess cupcake? it could be a toss up.

well well, im turning the big 32..hmm that doesnt sound that exciting when i type it. 32, 32, 32, 32, 32, 32...okay a little better, though it still means im going to get carded for the umptenth time when i buy myself bud light lime, i always tell them its the sunglasses and spf in my moisturizer (notice how i dont say lotion, did i even spell the 'm' word right, hmm) that keeps me looking like im 17....which sounds great until you want a pack of smokes and have to trudge all the way to your car in the pouring rain, to get the piece of plastic that tells them you really are old enough. and mind you, very wize.

cheers to all the christmas babies, the ones who get forgotten, the ones who just get one gift, the ones who get the bday gift in xmas paper, the ones who's grandmas send them christmas sweaters that you can only really wear that one fabulous day of the year..

5:30 am - husband comes home from a long night of brewing super yucky beer...we prefer german beer, so its all yucky if it isn't...wait i lied...we like bud light lime
5;45 am - i fall back to sleep hoping he hadn't turned up the heater to boil me alive
7:00 am - wake up, wake up child
7:05 am - wake up child again
7:10 am - shake child awake...and she is past the shaken baby syndrome age...thank god
7:11 am - go to porch to freeze my arse off while i smoke a cigarette...oops did i say that...yes i smoke..its taking the bad years off, the diaper years, the drooling years, the "who are you again, i cant believe you are my child years"...at least that is what i tell myself
7:14 am - come back in to the house, partially frozen and smelling not so lovely....sit in front of the computer and check my email, check etsy, check email again...and ponder why i have no sales...hmm i tell myself its the holidays...secretly stressed out
7:30 am ...yell to child from computer....ARE YOU READY , YOUR GONNA MISS THE BUS!!!
7:31 am - child yells back...IM BRUSHING MY HAIR, DOES IT LOOK BOUNCY?, i yell back...LOOKS BOUNCY, lets go
7:40 am - search around for keys, get child ready, make sure child has back pack, insturment (depending if it is tuesday or thursday) wait....what day is it...damn check the calander..okay lets go
7:45 am - back from dropping off sed child to bus stop, disrobe gigantic coat that makes me look like a snowman from a bad eighties movie, head to the bed where i first freeze my husband...which i secretly enjoy...then fall peacfully back to sleep.
11:30 - 12:30 am/pm - depending on the day...i get up, groggy and needing my triple expresso fix...im not joking about this, i drip expresso with a bit of organic sugar, the organic parts makes me feel better about myself...considering i just took off another year of my life with the caffine.
12:40 pm - check etsy, check email, check etsy, check email...check forums, read blogs, tell people i posted on my blog, check views on my shoppe
1:30 pm - print out orders, check etsy, check views...wonder how to get more sales..try to be super quiet to not wake sleeping beauty of a husband (ps sleeping beauty has a mohawk)
1:50 pm - depending on amount of orders.....cut fabric, fold fabric, pack fabric...and repeat
3:00 pm - log onto paypal and fight with the usps shipping tool on paypal...at least im saving 5%
on shipping, am i really saving 5%...spending many minutes figuring out who's husband belongs to which wife's order......hooray for husband's paypal account. what is he buying?
3:40 pm - check etsy, check email, check etsy, check email...check forums, read blogs, tell people i posted on my blog, check views on my shoppe
4:00 pm - sed child comes home from school...convo sounds like this...
me: how was school?
sed child: it was great?
sed child: i'm hungry?
sed child? can i get on the computer
me: im working....even though im reading blogs...that counts doesn't it?
sed child goes to fridge digs around, finds food, turns on tv, asks me a bunch of questions i really dont listen to and give hap hazard answers...as im thinking ssshhhs..im trying to relist here.
4:20 pm - oh s%&t i have to go to the post office....i want everyones stuff to get there super duper pronto style.
4:45 pm - at the supermarket again...what the heck did i need, hmm those fabulous chocolate cookies look fab, and that great cheap bottle of rose wine, yumm ........ oh dinner, whoops forgot about that.
5:00 pm- get home, check etsy, check email, check etsy, check email...check forums, read blogs, tell people i posted on my blog, check views on my shoppe

so the signage is a work in process...my husband and i decided to open a business in our town, we found this fabulous little building right off the main street next to a super busy coffee spot. the buildings rent was so super cheap, we couldnt pass it up

when you walk in the door..we are going to tear out the door and the wall that you see when you first walk in...this is where my fabric business will live....i plan on selling my fabrics here too ..i also opened a new fabric shoppe on etsy.. rainbow fabrics, so everything has the same name (i think in time i will phase out adele hartlep)...and renting beach cruisers

we live in this great little resort town in northern california...20 minutes to the beach, 5 minutes to a national redwood park...its beautiful

this is where i think i will hold sewing classes and the bikes will be stored on the other side of the wall on the right.

tutorial four - making miniatures into jewelry

the easiest thing in the world ...if you have a few key items
* super sticky glue..i used dazzle tac (jewelry grade glue)
glue was used to glue the pie and fork to the ring, and to glue the pie to the pie pan
* ring bases bought from halolo at etsy
base was used for the ring
* japanese miniatures
IM HAVING A DEAL..BUY THREE GET ONE FREE
* lighter and needle
the lighter and needle was only used to make a hole on the apple pie necklace.

i get to choose what i sell as a supplier, with most of my fabrics, i sell them cause i love them. i pick them cause i love the designs......and now i found something else to love. and super cute.

re-ment..miniatures food and such. these things make great funky jewelry, i got my two good rings..the wedding band and the eternity ring...but besides those i love fun and funky jewelry and i imagine there are a few more like me.

so im expecting my order next week and i'll start supplying them through my etsy store and try and make some jewelry to sell it locally in my town. (we'll see about that though)...don't get me wrong love my fabric but am so excited

dogs by heather ross, freespirit fabrics...i love the print, it has a chihuahua in a teacup and the pink makes a great accent color. another thing about freespirit fabrics is that they can be so soft...this one feels so nice to the touch

evening light by tina givens, freespirit fabrics...the buggies..its another great contrast thought not as soft as the dog fabric

jewel mobile by alexander henry...the colors are nice and muted, great color palette. i think this could be used in alot of different projects

koto by alexander henry...i love dragons, born in the year of the dragon, beautiful pink color with beautifully illustrated flowers.

so these are my favorites for now, but that changes often

i was up late on election night and was watching previews on ondemand...in the brief 30 second clip i was hooked...i don't particularly like old movies, this one was made in 1967 and was then nominated for 10 oscars, won two.

its about two people who meet and fall in love in hawaii, then they decide to get married after ten days. the whole story is about how they tell there parents and the parents reaction...both sides being supposed liberals. its funny but in a very subtle way

i was laughing so hard, great love story, amazing acting...i can't tell you how much you will enjoy this fabulous movie.

im sitting patiently infront of my computer...waiting, waiting, and waiting some more till my friend miguel, who is staying with me this weekend, and my husband to get up.

its freaking 12:40, the kid is out of the house..im hungry..i want food..
okay given we stayed up a bit last night, went dancing at my tiny towns (pop 1030) fabulous gay bar...is one of four in the town. it was great i actually felt like i was in the city (san francisco) but with only a 5 minute drive home...can't beat dancing and redwoods in your backyard.

should i wake them...should i watch a movie...should i etsy...should i forum....i sure don't want to clean....yuck, maybe i can start making a bit more noise, maybe that will wake miguel up out of his snoremacous..

using fabric from heather ross's lighting bugs and other mysteries. i was searching online the other day and came across martha stewart's website...i am still amazed at how creative that woman is... bless her soul (i think we still all remenber). so, i found this how to by anna marie homer, she designs fabric for freespirit, i thought it would go well with my no-sew fabric tutorial series...this is number three. so on we go, its super easy..and lots of fun

step one ...covering the frame
* i used ready to paint canvases that i bought at beverly's for super cheap, cut the fabric so it is a bit bigger that the board, making sure that the is enough to wrap around the frame and touch the wood.
*break out your staple gun, start on one side, then go to the other side...making sure to pull the fabric snug...tight, tight, and tight. i didn't pull mine tight enough so there are wrinkles in it now after applying the modge podge.
*then work your way around the frame until the fabric is stapled all the way around, and it doesn't have to be perfect on the back...that part will be facing the wall.

and wah lah..it should look like this..but with your fabric.;)

step four..the modge podge

*the easiest step...just paint over the canvases with modge podge and then let it dry for a good bit
*and now you have fabulous glossy..or matte if you swing that way..fabric covered canvases, p.s. i almost didn't want to paint over them. and you see the wrinkles..tighter, opps!
step something ...sorry no picture
* find a picture or image of what you want to paint, cut it out and make it into a stencil
*using a pencil trace or freehand, if you are brave onto the canvas

last step...home free home

* now you got choices, you can either paint around the image or paint inside the image...half full or half empty?
* let dry and insta art with beautiful fabric..

now for a bit of information..
Scholars trace the origins of "dia de los muertos" the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl in enlish " lady of the dead".
The observance of the holiday is on the first and second of november, with a connection to the catholic holidays ..."all saint's day" and "all soul's day", which " all saint's day " on the first celebrates all saints known and unknown who have attain beatific vision in heaven ( eternal and direct perception of god enjoyed by those in heaven). The second " all soul's day" commerates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached heaven.

In most regions of Mexico, November 1st honors deceased children and infants where as deceased adults are honored on November 2nd. Generally referring to November 1st mainly as "Día de los Inocentes" ..day of the innocents, but also as "Día de los Angelitos" ...day of the little angels and November 2nd as "Día de los Muertos" or "Día de los Difuntos" ..day of the dead.

just a bit about dia de los muertos..(wikipedia helped me out, they have a lot more on it too..) i have to say i never knew about the all saints day and all souls day... im glad im still learning something new everyday, i know my parents would be very proud of me if they could see me know. i love you both very much and miss you even more, more than you can imagine.

from etsy. i was looking to start a group to meet once a month and i met this fabulous lady that sells fantastically gory barbie dolls.

it was so nice to make a friend, since i have lived in my new town for almost a year( pop. 1000)..and haven't met anyone that i would want to chat with.. the few people i talk to are the post man at usps.. and hmmm i think that is all...wait , wait i chat with my daughters friends but thats just to say hi and tell them not to touch are super meany head jack russell..that will bit you..let me say that again...he will bit you

im happy someone to chat with and talk about grown up stuff, mom was right it is harder to make friends when you are older, everybody is busy...and i never leave my house, well i do but not enough...thats the bad thing about working from home...

tutorial two - fabric covered magnetic rack with fabric magnets

here goes for my second tutorial on using fabric without a sewing machine.....or how many different ways you can use a glue gun, without burning and gluing your fingers together

the supplies....trusty glue gun, some sort of cutting device...i like my rotary cutter, fabric...either one fabric for both the magnets and rack or two for contrast...i choose contrasting, buttons to cover plus the mold and pusher, magnets, and the magnetic rack...here we go!!!

step one ...cut out a round piece of fabric, i eyed how big they need to be and it doesn't have to be a perfect circle, the closer the better though. make sure that the fabric circle is big enough to cover the mold and remember big enough that when you push the button into the fabric that you have enough fabric coming out .

step two....put the fabric over the mold making sure that is covering the mold evenly, then take the button and push it into the mold. take the pusher and push the fabric into the mold over the button, this will make sure that the fabric doesn't come out of the button...which can happen but is easy to fix...just undo the button from the mold and reposition. then take the cover and push into the mold making sure to get all the fabric covered with the cover...give a good push and wahlah....fabric button

step three...now to turn the button into a magnet....you won't believe how easy this is.....just glue the magnet on the back...the easiest step...now the fun part, watch the fingers

step four....make sure to step this up on something that you don't mind getting covered with glue, i used a flat rate box from usps. first glue the fabric ends to the rack, make sure to glue the fabric the attach to the rack...if you don't it may not stick. make sure to pull the fabric firm.. next glue down one side of the fabric to the rack...watch the fingers and the glue strands...it can get messy. now on the last side to be glued down, i made a glued hem so it looks more seamline, after i glued the hem, i pulled the fabric and glued it down......guess what?! your done...

redesigning my work space

i started my business in the beginning of june, and my workspace is on my enclosed porch, which was great during the summer...nice and warm....i sit on my computer and look at the redwoods.

but now the rain is coming and i need to move everything inside, but create a space in my sitting room that doesn't resemble a fabric store....

so on saturday i'm going to trusty old ikea, and buying furniture to create a living workspace....(so you don't see fabric and such everywhere)

wish me luck...and ill post the finished product with before and after pictures

i had bought this great book from barnes and noble, cheap and beautiful....after i saw her shoppe and saw that she sold bookmarks... i knew what my female family members where getting.

tutorial one....fabric art

yeah...my first tutorial, i wanted to show that fabric has many uses...even without a sewing machine

step one...measure the fabric to the canvas, leaving enough room to wrap around when done

step two... ironing on the fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric...(making an iron on patch..applique)

step three....draw what ever shape you want on your fabric using a fabric chalk stick

step four...after making all your iron applique pieces, time to figure out the layout.. after making this i realized that i should have used a better background fabric...oops

step five....iron it all on, remember to be careful taking off the backing

step six....now place your canvas on the fabric and use hot glue to attach the fabric onto the frame

finish product...yeah .....but my back hurts now,

so i work from home, and i only really get out during the week is to go to the post office. and thank gosh i get enough sales that i go every day...thank god.

after many a day on the computer doing fabric research and listing fabrics, taking pictures, making phone calls and blah blah blah. i decided to take a field trip to my near by fabric stores. i need to touch someone else's fabrics, check their prices, and see what type of selection they were offering.

first stop a little shop called material girl or chic, my bad. in santa rosa. they had a great selection, nice and bright. fabrics from the regulars. robert kaufman, a. henry, freespirit, moda, and so on.

joanns...same stuff like they always have, bland florals, cheap feeling cottons...but they do have a great novelty fabric selection...and if you look real hard when walking down the rows you can spot a alexander henry fabric every so often.

the next stop was quilting bee, cute little shop. not that bright of a selection. i say i liked a handful.

the thing that caught my eye the most, and makes me love etsy, was the prices...everything runs around 8.99 to 10.99. except joann's....

thank you fellow etsian fabric sellers...i love fabric and i love my sewing machine.

for me this site is absolutely hilarious....it has a few questionable situations, like peeing on a fly then it accidently flys in the guys mouth....that is about the worst of it.

this is a korean based website, its in half english and half korean, about a cartoonman named boomba, each epsiode is about boomba trying to win over his girl but each time making a fool of himself, in very funny situations. set to numerous songs that are from the 80's and early nineties.

i have watched these numerous times and each time i am laughing so hard.

so i decided to hold my first fabric sale, alot of my intent behind this is to lessen the amount of fabric stock I have, so that i can order more....hence offer more products to my customers.

all freesprirt fabrics are on sale, fabrics from the park slope collection, annabella, garden party, and from the brand new line by heather ross.

the sale is from today the 5th of august to the 8th of august.

I just wanted to say that I hit a hundred sales on etsy!

I have had my shop opened for 2 months, and I finally hit that number! In the two months time I have learned alot about running my own business, never thought I would say that at 31. It has been quite a little adventure.

With out the help of other etsians, it would have been alot bumpier than it has been. The vast variety of information that you can get from the forums is fabulous.

I suggest that if you use etsy for either selling or buying, make good use of the forums.
